After teaching and coaching careers in Ohio and Indiana, Dan and Nan Wakefield wanted to return home to Wooster and build their careers in the local community. One of Dan's friends had left coaching to become an agent with State Farm Insurance and through him, Dan discovered the business opportunity available with the company. Once back in Ohio, Dan began studying for his State insurance license and for his own career with State Farm. One of the requirements to become a State Farm agent is to talk to 1,000 people about the renewal date of their home or auto insurance and to have them agree that they will let you review their coverage with them before their renewal date. Dan went from coaching college athletics to going door to door speaking with people about their insurance coverage. Once licensed, Dan was employed by State Farm for two years and on August 1, 1980, he became an independent contractor and has continued to represent State Farm ever since. We visited with Dan and his wife Nan recently while they offered insight into their constantly growing company;

In legislation passed in December 2003, you'll find a passage of Medicare law pertaining to prescription drug coverage. One of the provisions included in this law is that enables anyone having a qualifying health insurance policy to also have a "health savings account" where they can place tax sheltered money to be used for medical expenses. Most insurance companies have yet to develop a strategy for incorporating these changes into their operation, but at State Farm, we already have not only the product to implement health savings accounts but also the knowledge to safely guide our clients through this labyrinth of change.
