Providing a Window into the Earth

Nobody knows how much work goes into preparing to build. Nobody that is except the crew at Earthbound Drilling in Wadsworth. Owner Tom Suchan opened the soil drilling company in 2002 with his brother Tim, his son, and his wife. Having worked in the field of test boring since the mid-eighties, Tom knew this was the kind of work he wanted to do, but he wanted to work for himself. Over the past few years, Earthbound Drilling has worked all over the state of Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania, drilling soil samples for engineering firms that need to know what kind of soil they are going to build on. We sat down recently with Tom and Tim, and listened as they provided this overview of their operation;

Earthbound Drilling is a soil-drilling company offering a wide range of versatility and uniqueness. We perform soil borings for builders, specialized testing within the holes we've bored, set monitoring wells for water tables, and drill for environmental testing. Due to our specialized equipment, we are able to drill in places that are unaccessible to other companies.

We cater to the engineering industry, performing soil borings that are required by various government agencies before commercial buildings are constructed. These tests allow the builders to identify the type of soil underlying the proposed construction site, and to aid in determining the most advantageous design for the building's foundation. Prior to highway construction, we perform core drillings to determine the type of soil and rock underlying the roadbed. As it's common for low lying areas to be filled with soil from surrounding high ground, we also run tests on the nearby high ground to determine its suitability for use as fill.

Earthbound Drilling also drills holes and perform tests for a variety of other projects. We test to determine if the cement or other material that will be poured will set properly or filter out into the surrounding rock. We've bored wells that help officials monitor the level of the water table and drilled to determine the extent of soil contamination when service stations have below surface gas tank leaks. We perform environment drilling to help calculate erosion on hillsides, many times discovering slippage that is occurring thirty feet or more below the surface.

Earthbound Drilling will tackle projects that other drilling companies are not equipped to handle. Typically, we drill to between twenty and thirty feet, although we have the capability to drill to 115 feet if necessary. Unlike drilling firms that use truck mounted drills, we have a drill that fits onto a trailer, and can be moved off the trailer if we need to work in less accessible locations, such as on a hillside or inside a commercial building. We've conducted test bores inside the Lordstown General Motors plant, at water treatment plants, and we've also taken our drill out onto the ice in Marblehead to assist the Coast Guard in their re-dredging efforts.

Earthbound Drilling specializes in helping construction and engineering firms determine what lies beneath the surface before the build. Call Earthbound Drilling today, and don't forget to tell them The Advocate sent you!
