From Dirt Bikes to ATVs

With encouragement from his uncle, Jess Salmon began tinkering with motorbikes when he was only eight years old. His first lessons were learning to change the air filter and the oil on a '74 Harley and as time went on, his interest in bikes just continued to grow. While working at The Gerstenslager Company, Jess dreamt of owning his own business and he began to build his current shop. Finally, on January 5, 1999, his shop was ready and Dirt Road Cycles opened its doors to the public for the first time. During a recent visit, Jess's enthusiasm while telling us about his shop let us know just how much he loves his work;

Dirt Road Cycles specializes in ATV and dirt bike repair, race motors, accessories, and parts. Throughout the Winter months, we do a bit of prep work on street bikes but our forté has always been the ATVs and dirt bikes. We do anything from minor motor repair to building racing motors including porting and polishing, rebuilding crankshafts, re-boring cylinders, performing valve work, and handling complete motor rebuilds.

We have access to just about any part you need and if we don't have it in stock, we can have it here in just a few days. A lot of times, I'll buy a bike and just part it out because I know people who are going to be needing the parts and through my network of friends, we can usually locate just about anything you need including parts for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. We sell HMF exhausts, JE pistons, hot cams and a wide assortment of stock and performance parts in addition to apparel, belts, helmets, and occassionally, even used dirt bikes.

Through the shop, I sponsor a lot of kids that race for us. We race at Summit Indoor Fairgrounds and we enjoy working with the CRA. Personally, I like going to watch the Junior Mini's and this year I'm looking forward to working with one of our new contestants. This past year we did pretty well and received a few second and third places and everyone really enjoys the sport and the competition. We even have a little track of our own out back for testing the bikes and quads.

We offer pick-up and delivery service throughout Wayne and Medina Counties and since I always carry parts with me, a lot of guys will call me right from the track when they're having problems. Actually, that's the best time to work on their bikes since they can show me what's wrong and I can see how the bikes are performing out on the track.

Dirt Road Cycles is one of the most straight-forward shops you'll ever find. If you come to me, I'll tell you exactly what needs to be repaired, how much it will cost, and then you can decide for yourself if you want the work done. I pride myself on being honest and competitively priced. This is a small shop, I don't have a large overhead that I need to cover, and you'll get a straight answer from me every time.

If you want something done, take it to a small shop where your project will receive the personal attention of the owner. When you're looking for a straight answer about dirt bikes and ATVs, call Dirt Road Cycles and don't forget to tell Jess that The Advocate sent you!
