The Cancer Treatment Center in Wooster is home to the most advanced cancer treatment therapy to be found anywhere. Prior to their opening in 1990, cancer patients were traveling from Wayne County to Canton, Cleveland, Hartville, Mansfield, and Columbus for their treatment, many times making the trip twice each day. Now providing leading edge treatment locally, the Cancer Treatment Center brings comfort and support to their patients while saving them the needless inconvenience of lengthy car rides to secure treatment.. Mary Alice Streeter, Administrator of the Cancer Treatment Center, explains their services and goals;
The Cancer Treatment Center provides state-of-the-art radiation therapy services in a patient-friendly atmosphere. We offer external beam radiation therapy to treat all types of tumors including breast, lung, brain, neck, and prostate tumors. We also provide palliative care to eliminate some of the pain caused by cancer and to help our patients live more comfortable lives. Our patients come from throughout Wayne County, Medina County, Holmes County, and from Ashland and Mansfield.
Our patients are referred to us by their physicians and meet with one of our highly trained Radiation Oncologists to develop a personalized, comprehensive treatment program. This precise and complex treatment plan begins with a computed tomography scan (CAT scan) which is used to produce a computerized simulation of the recommended treatment outlining the plan and proper radiation dosage for treatment. Our licensed therapists are with our patients throughout all phases of their treatment to provide both educational and emotional support.
Our Radiation Oncologists are Board Certified Radiation Oncologists with training from some of the best known cancer treatment hospitals and institutes in the country including the prestigious M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. Our physicians constantly strive to remain on the leading edge of cancer research and treatment by participating in national clinical trials and by working with a number of organizations to study the benefits of various treatment protocols. Also on board, we have a Radiation Physicist who checks to make sure that the equipment is calibrated properly to deliver the right amount of radiation to the treatment site. In consultation with the Radiation Oncologists, the physicist determines the treatment schedule that will be most effective in killing the cancer cells. Our Dosimetrist then plans and calculates the proper radiation dosage for each treatment. The staff at the Cancer Treatment Center has proven themselves to be leaders in their field and work together using a team approach to radiation therapy.
The Cancer Treatment Center provides a friendly, supportive environment and unlike most radiation centers located in hospitals, our patients can come in for a treatment and be back out the door in fifteen minutes. Our equipment is the latest, state-of-the-art equipment and we have the most up-to-date treatment methods available. The therapy we're doing here in Wooster is the most advanced therapy you can receive anywhere.
